The adult Karate and kickboxing classes have been a great addition to my weekly routine. I am learning self-defense as well as meeting great people and gaining confidence while getting into great physical condition. Sensei Murphy is a knowledgeable instructor and explains things well while demonstrating techniques. I highly recommend Glens Falls Karate Academy.

The adult class is a really great and supportive group to learn with! Not only is Sensei Murphy awesome, but the other dojo members really go out of their way to make it a welcoming atmosphere. The self defense part of the training is my favorite! Having the ability to dissect the moves and practice them weekly makes me feel more confident in my everyday life.

Sensei Murphy is patient and encouraging. He is sincere and giving of his time.
Karate is such an incredible sport. It teaches you control, focus, & balance - physically and mentally. It stimulates your mind because you have to think about the strategies. What's interesting about this sport is that it is more about the skills and the techniques and applying them correctly, than your physical size.

I've have known Chris Murphy for several years and he is a wonderful man. His teaching style not only teaches the art of Karate, but he teaches the children pride, respect of self and others and hard work.

Had the pleasure of giving a seminar there this weekend....Sensei Murphy should be very proud. He runs a top notch school with a bunch of talented students. I am very proud to have him represent us as his governing organization.

I had my first lesson in Goshin Ryu Karate on 1/12/2015. Even though I have a martial arts background myself in both Jiu-Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do, I found Sensei Murphy's class to be fantastic. It was amazing to work on my sparring skills with such a knowledgeable instructor as him. I am very much looking forward to continuing my training with him.

My daughter has been a student here for years and I would highly recommend this school to anyome looking to learn new martial arts and not be like every other martial arts school in the area! Chris is a great teacher and leader to these kids. They offer adult classes too, Come try a class and make your own opinion.

My daughter started a few months ago and has enjoyed the challenges, friendships, structure, community and education that sensei Chris Murphy provides. There is never a moment she isn't excited to go to class! As a parent I have noticed the difference in my child's focus, attitude and confidence not only about herself but in what she is doing as well!! Thank you sensei!!!

Routines – Shifting Into A New Normal

The recent closures of schools and businesses are widespread and have led to major disruptions in the daily routines of our families. Kids are trying to adjust to navigating school at home and parents are now trying to balance their new work from home life with their role as teacher to their kids. To cope, it’s important for families to implement daily routines that incorporate school and work along with family time and hobbies.

Humans are creatures of habit and when our everyday lives are disturbed, we become anxious. For kids, this anxiety often leads to behavior problems which can create power struggles and difficulty completing schoolwork. To help ease these challenges, implementing routines will create a better balance and help parents manage expectations and stick to them. By doing this, kids will have a greater sense of security and will be more likely to cooperate.

Since we are all faced with uncharted territory, it can be stressful to even think about implementing a new routine. But if we use this time as an opportunity for growth, executing a new routine will be easier. For kids, this time can help them learn more self-discipline and self-control. With a consistent daily routine and consistent daily expectations in place, kids can also begin to adopt these new constructive habits, which are life skills much needed today.

It’s important to remember, however, that routines should have time scheduled for regular breaks. When kids are at school, they are not doing academic work for 7 hours straight. They have time for recess, lunch, change of classes, physical education, music, art, etc. There is also a time that the school day ends so it’s important to make sure this time is established as well. By doing this, kids learn to look forward to things and are more likely to adhere to the routines put in place.

The class routine of the kids programs at Glens Falls Karate Academy were developed with this information in mind. The sequence of class each day is the same: warm-up, mat chat, drills, skill evaluation, cool-down, game. This procedure helps kids know what to expect each class and gives them something fun to look forward to. A routine created in this way helps boosts creativity and learning.

The uncertainty of when things will go back to “normal” is stressful. Implementing new routines may seem difficult at first but will ultimately help everyone feel more at ease. As this is done, we must be patient with each other and ourselves. Navigating through

each day, now, is a new experience for everyone and we all deserve grace. Focusing on the new and improved behaviors that will come out of this experience will help us all keep moving forward.
